When temperatures rise, so do the heat related risks on the job. Heat stress is a serious workplace hazard that can lead to fatigue, injury, lost productivity, and in severe cases, life-threatening conditions.
Across Canada, employers are responsible for identifying and controlling heat-related risks as a part of their duty to protect workers. As hotter summers become more common, heat safety is no longer optional.
What is Heat Stress and Why it Matters
Heat stress occurs when the body can no longer regulate its internal temperature effectively. Normally, the body cools itself through sweating and increased blood flow. But in hot, humid, or physically demanding environments, this system can fail.
When this happens, workers are at risk of:
- Heat rashes
- Muscle cramps from dehydration Dizziness
- Heat exhaustion
- Heat stroke (in severe cases)
Even mild symptoms can quickly escalate if not addressed.
How to Prevent Heat Stress on the Job
Effective heat stress prevention comes down to planning, awareness, and the right equipment.
Hydration Is Non-Negotiable
Encourage workers to drink water regularly, not just when they feel thirsty. Dehydration is one of the leading causes of heat-related illness.
Build in Rest and Recovery
Schedule frequent breaks in shaded or cooled areas. Giving the body time to cool down is critical in maintaining safe core temperatures.
Adjust Work Practices
Schedule heavy tasks during cooler parts of the day and rotate workers to reduce exposure. These administrative controls significantly reduce risk.
Train Teams to Spot the Signs
Workers and supervisors should know how to recognize early symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, or confusion and act immediately.
Equip Workers with the Right Gear
The right safety products can make a measurable difference. Cooling gear, breathable apparel, and proper hydration help regulate body temperature and reduce heat strain.
