Canada’s wildfire season continues to grow longer and more intense, increasing the risk of smoke exposure for workers in outdoor and industrial spaces across the country. This year’s prairie wildfires are already impacting air quality across Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, forcing employers to take critical measures to protect the respiratory health of their workforce.
Understand the Risk
Wildfire smoke is a combination of gases, water vapour, and particles, with fine particles posing the biggest threat. These particles can penetrate deep into workers lungs leading to irritation, infections such as pneumonia, or exacerbation of pre-existing conditions such as asthma. Workers who spend extended periods of time outdoors or in facilities with poor ventilation or open doors are most vulnerable to smoke-induced health effects.
A Breath of Fresh Air
N95 masks – or respirators – are a key piece of equipment for protecting against the fine particles found in wildfire smoke. N95s are certified to filter out at least 95% of airborne particles, greatly reducing the risk of common wildfire symptoms.
However, just putting on a mask isn’t enough – certified fit testing is essential to ensure your workforce is properly protected.
The Right Fit for the Job
Fit testing confirms that respirators seal tightly to the user’s face, ensuring air only flows through the filter which prevents unfiltered air making its way into the lungs. A proper fit test requires a certified professional to select the right size and shape of mask, train workers on the proper method for donning, and verify a proper seal is achieved. Fit testing can NOT be performed on oneself.
